Teaching
grown-ups well.

When adults learn well, lives, workplaces, and communities flourish

I help people change lives by teaching grown-ups well.

Grounded in research and inspired by humanity, my work helps you move beyond delivering information to creating genuine transformation.

What I know to be true is that when adults learn well, they think differently.

They lead differently. They care differently. They build stronger workplaces, healthier organisations and more connected communities.

Teaching grown-ups well is more than education.

When we teach grown-ups well, we help people become who they came hoping they could be.

Dr. Lisa Ellem

Hello, I am Lisa,

I have spent more than two decades teaching in health (nursing), education (primary, vocational education and training, and tertiary), and the community. Prior to this, I was a health care professional working in hospitals and in the community across Australia and parts of the UK.

As an avid learner and teacher, I pursued doctoral research exploring what adult learners need. Through listening to learners' stories, I discovered four interconnected needs that shape meaningful learning:

Change. Self. Community. Joy.

Today, I combine research, neuroscience and practical experience to help educators create learning that is engaging, human and transformational.

The Four Pillars

Adults learn best when they can:

Navigate Change
Understand Self
Belong to Community
Experience Joy

These four needs form the foundation of everything I now teach.

“Lisa has not only been a friendly, supportive teacher, but she has also held me to account to self-reflect and improve my skills and knowledge."

Adult Learner TANYA GRIFFIN

Lisa is an exceptional mentor and educator, demonstrating understanding and compassion and creating a supportive, safe environment in which her students feel comfortable learning. Team discussions were engaging and informative, often provoking deeper reflection and learning. She also guided us individually, which allowed me to build my professional judgement. Lisa is passionate and committed to teaching adult learners and is genuinely invested in each of her students' success. Her mentorship has had a lasting impact on me, and I highly recommend her to anyone as a mentor or teacher.

And Adult Learner SHARON PAGE  said:

The qualities you brought to the classroom when I was returning to learning as an adult made a huge difference to my self-confidence and enjoyment of the whole learning journey. I know this was true for others in the group. It was not just your expertise and years of hands-on industry experience, but also your warmth and ability to connect with people and encourage them to believe in themselves. Your sense of humour always made learning fun too.

An Invitation

Ready to teach grown ups well?

Whether you are a university educator, workplace trainer, facilitator, coach or industry expert, I would love to help you create learning that adults remember long after the session ends.
